Speaking and writing are often described as the “hardest skills” in language assessment, and for good reason. Unlike reading or listening, productive skills require learners to generate language in real time, organize ideas, and communicate clearly with appropriate grammar, vocabulary, tone, and structure.

C2 (Proficient)
Speaking: Near-native fluency; can express subtle meaning, adapt register, and respond naturally to complexity.
Writing: Produces sophisticated, accurate writing with strong style and nuance.
Reliable assessment methods:

- Advanced writing tasks
- Expert-level evaluation criteria
What Can Be Assessed Reliably (When Done Properly)
Speaking can be reliably assessed when:
- prompts reflect real communication (not scripted repetition)
- tasks are structured and CEFR-aligned
- scoring uses clear rubrics
- responses are recorded for review
- AI supports consistency without replacing human judgment entirely
Writing can be reliably assessed when:
- tasks match real-world output (emails, paragraphs, essays)

What Can’t Be Assessed Reliably (and Why)

The Limitations of Multiple-Choice Tests
Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are efficient and valuable for certain skills. They work well for:
vocabulary recognition
grammar in context
reading comprehension
some listening comprehension
But MCQs cannot assess speaking or writing directly.
Why MCQs fail for speaking and writing:
